About Bowen 4 U

What is Bowen Therapy?

bowen4u-stanmorebay

A gentle musculoskeletal release system developed by natural therapist, the late Thomas Ambrose Bowen in Australia during the 1950’s & 60’s. The technique involves ‘Bowen Moves’ – slow, defined, singular rolling movements over muscles, tendons and ligaments (occasionally directly over particular nerves). It is not a form of massage, nor does it involve manipulation of the vertebrae. I always tell my clients that Bowen is all about ‘LOW & SLOW’ and ‘LESS IS BEST’

How did I get Involved?

I have always had an interest in fitness and the wellness industry, thus have a relevant educational history. Previous learning and training over the last 23 years include; Bowen Therapy, Reiki Healing, Emmett Technique, Foot Joint Mobilisation, Massage, Exercise Science, Medical Terminology, Psychology, Human Anatomy & Physiology, Animal Behaviour & Care. My personal experience of acute and chronic pain led me to Bowen and other Natural Therapy Styles. After trying mainstream treatments with little or no resolve I discovered Bowen Therapy and Reiki. I found these alternative techniques gentle yet highly effective for all my aches & pains. Becoming involved in natural therapies was a positive progression for me and I have never looked back.

How does it work?

The correct application of the Bowen Technique begins a relaying of neural messages via the fascia – bands of connective tissue which surround musculoskeletal structures and is important to the maintainence of posture and flexibility.  The information about the state of a particular structure is relayed through the autonomic nervous system, brain & back to the area of concern. The message received stimulates the body’s natural healing response to relax, reset, and realign.  A great analogy for the bowen move is pressing the reboot button on your computer- thus resetting or changing patterns of misalignment, acute and chronic pain.

What to expect:

Your initial consultation will cover the reason for your visit, medical history, and your first Bowen Therapy Session. Allow 45 minutes to an hour including consult.

The Bowen treatment is generally performed through clothing, so wear something loose and comfortable and be well hydrated. After each set of gentle Bowen Moves a wait period of two minutes is allowed when I will leave the room entirely. These short frequent breaks during the treatment allows the body to absorb, process and respond. Remember Bowen Therapy is low and slow, not hard and fast.
